Labour Rights, Policy Enforcement, and the Socio-Economic Implications of Informal Employment Practices in Developing and Developed Economies
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper investigates the persistent labour rights violations arising from weak policy enforcement and informal employment practices, including hiring without contracts, delayed wage payments, and unjust dismissals. Drawing on case studies from SMEs in developing nations and experiences of undocumented workers in developed economies, it exposes how inadequate legal safeguards leave employees vulnerable to exploitation. Using evidence from field observations and international labour standards, the study examines the structural governance gaps that enable such practices, their impact on productivity, worker retention, and market stability, and the broader socio-economic consequences for national development. It calls for stronger government enforcement, institutional accountability, and multi-stakeholder engagement to protect workers’ rights and foster sustainable economic growth.
