IoT-Enhanced Energy Management System: Real-Time Monitoring and Load Scheduling

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Rapid urbanization and growing energy demand in India necessitate a transition from conventional post-paid energy metering systems to IoT-enhanced smart energy management solutions. This study evaluates the performance, economic impact, and sustainability benefits of IoT-enabled meters compared with traditional postpaid systems through real-time data analysis, field trials, and AI-driven load optimization. The IoT system integrates PZEM-004T sensors and cloud-based analytics to achieve ±0.5% measurement accuracy and sub-second billing granularity (₹0.0025/sec). Results from a 6-month pilot across 500 households demonstrated a 28% reduction in peak-hour consumption, 22% lower energy bills, and 15% decrease in carbon footprint through dynamic tariff adjustments and load scheduling. In contrast, traditional systems exhibit inefficiencies such as 12% billing errors and delayed fault detection. The IoT framework also reduces Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses by 18% by detecting tampering and unauthorized usage. This study underscores the critical role of IoT meters in advancing India's Smart Grid Mission, achieving renewable energy targets, and empowering consumers with real-time insights. The findings advocate policy reforms to accelerate IoT adoption, ensuring equitable energy access, and grid resilience in urban and rural landscapes.
