The Effectiveness of the Creative Mathematical Problem-Solving Practices in Improving the Performance in General Mathematics of the Grade 11 Learners in Calauag West District, Division of Quezon

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study assessed the effectiveness of creative mathematical problem-solving practices in enhancing the performance of Grade 11 learners in General Mathematics in the Calauag West District, Division of Quezon, for the School Year 2023–2024. It examined the level of creative problem-solving practices in terms of flexibility, fluency, originality, and elaboration, and evaluated their impact on performance in topics such as logarithmic functions, simple and compound interest, functions and their graphs, and basic business mathematics. The study also explored significant agreements in the evaluation of these practices among different groups of respondents and formulated policy recommendations based on the findings. Using a descriptive-evaluative-correlational research method and total enumeration sampling, the study analyzed data with tools such as weighted mean, rank order, and Kendall Coefficient of Concordance W. Results showed that creative mathematical problem-solving practices were rated "Much Evident," with elaboration receiving the highest mean score and fluency the lowest. Originality exhibited a significant agreement in rank order among aspects evaluated. The practices were also deemed "Much Effective" in improving performance, with basic business mathematics ranking highest, followed closely by other topics. However, no significant agreement was observed in rank order of effectiveness across respondent groups, except for logarithmic functions. Key policy recommendations include providing learners with access to interactive tools, professional development for teachers, and promoting creative and critical thinking in educational policies. Schools and the Department of Education are encouraged to allocate resources for initiatives fostering problem-solving skills. The study concluded that creative problem-solving practices significantly enhance learner performance and recommends their continued use and enhancement. Future research should examine their long-term impact, teacher training effectiveness, and applicability to other subjects.
