Research and Ethics: An Examination of Scholarly Contributions and Their Ethical Foundations
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: During our recent conference presentation, we delved deeply into the complex and nuanced topic of academic ethics, specifically focusing on the issue of honorary authorship. The session provided an in-depth analysis of how certain academic norms are sometimes exploited, particularly when it comes to the practice of granting authorship to individuals who have not made significant contributions to the research. One of the key issues highlighted was the problematic trend of thesis supervisors seeking authorship on papers despite minimal or insignificant involvement in the actual research. This practice not only undermines the integrity of academic work but also poses a threat to the credibility and scientific rigor of scholarly publications. By claiming authorship based solely on their supervisory role, these individuals may falsely assert ownership of the research, thereby devaluing the true efforts of the researchers involved. The presentation also addressed the broader implications of such unethical practices, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high ethical standards in scholarly publishing. We explored potential solutions and strategies to combat honorary authorship and ensure that credit is accurately and fairly attributed to those who have genuinely contributed to the research. Through a combination of case studies, real-world examples, and interactive discussions, the session aimed to raise awareness about the ethical challenges in academic publishing and inspire a commitment to upholding integrity in all aspects of scholarly work.
