Tourism Economics in Thailand: Balancing Growth and Sustainability in the Face of Global Trends (2030)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Tourism has traditionally been a key factor in Thailand's national and regional economic growth, making substantial contributions to GDP, employment, and foreign exchange income. Ranked among the world's leading tourist destinations, Thailand enjoys a rich cultural heritage, natural attractions, and friendly people. As the tourism industry has grown rapidly, however, so too have its detrimental impacts on the environment and culture, and issues of long-term sustainability have arisen. This paper examines the complex patterns of tourism economics in Thailand based on a thorough examination of historical trends, policy pressures, economic contribution, and increasing pressure for sustainable development. With models such as ARIMAX and demand-pull theories, the study examines both internal and external forces that affect tourism demand and competitiveness. Moreover, it explores the world trends shaping the future of tourism—climate change, technology disruption, human capital shortages, and post-pandemic recovery—and how these might shape Thailand's tourism planning to 2030. Drawing on global case studies and best practice, the paper advocates for balanced, sustainability-led tourism policies connecting economic progress with environmental conservation and social equity. It underscores the paramount significance of coordination among government, private sector, and local people to make Thailand's tourism strong, inclusive, and competitive at the global level in the next few years.
