EOSC Track - D3.2 Platform User Requirements Specification
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This deliverable outlines the user requirements for the EOSC Open Science Observatory platform, guiding its functional specifications and driving technical developments. The primary objective is to enhance the platform, initially developed under the EOSC Future project, by incorporating user feedback and addressing the evolving needs of a diverse user base. Utilizing a user-centered design approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives from key user groups, including researchers, policy analysts, university specialists, national points of reference for STI (country managers), and research administrators. Additionally, feedback from stakeholders such as the EOSC Steering Board, country managers, and NOADs was considered. These efforts provided deep insights into users' roles, interactions with the platform, and specific needs. The detailed user requirements analysis identified and prioritized the needs of different personas, ensuring the platform enhancements are aligned with real-world challenges and expectations. These enhancements aim to improve usability, data accessibility, and analytical capabilities, fostering a more robust and user-friendly platform. Key improvements include: Advanced Visualization Tools: Embedding new visualizations, including graphs and country maps, to aid overall analysis and make complex data easier to understand. Enhanced Navigation: Improved organization of topics with main topics at the top and related subtopics underneath, making the platform more intuitive and easier to navigate. Comprehensive OS Policy Data: Providing access to comprehensive data on national OS policies across different countries to analyze the effectiveness of OS policies. User-Friendly Interface: Designing a user-friendly interface for exploring and analyzing data, enhancing the overall user experience. Data Download Options: Offering easy-to-use data download options with clear instructions to facilitate further analysis and reporting. Trend Data and Best Practices: Access to trend data and best practice examples to help develop and enhance OS strategies by learning from successful examples. Comparative Reports and Visualizations: Tools for generating comparative reports and visualizations to support effective decision-making and policy development. In this updated deliverable, we have introduced a new Chapter, 4.2, describing the testing process for the first demo of the EOSC Open Science Observatory. In this chapter, we detail the steps taken to present the initial design to key stakeholders, including the EOSC Steering Board Sub-Group and other relevant events. This feedback has played a crucial role in refining the platform's design and functionalities, ensuring that the platform's development is in line with user needs and expectations. Acknowledgment to Anonymous Users of the EOSC Open Science Observatory We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all users of the EOSC Open Science Observatory who were willing to share their experiences and insights.
