Self-Driven by Vice

Abstract: This paper explores the relationship between vice and self-driven motivation through the lenses of existentialist and absurdist philosophy, while incorporating perspectives from humanistic psychology. It challenges traditional views of vice as a moral flaw or dysfunction, proposing instead that vices—ranging from basic impulses to more complex desires—serve as authentic expressions of human existence in an absurd world. Drawing on phenomenological analysis, the study highlights how vices can function as catalysts for personal growth, self-realization, and motivation. The paper uses historical case studies and philosophical reasoning to show how struggles with vice can spur societal transformation, revealing a paradoxical connection between moral elevation and existential authenticity. Ultimately, the research suggests that vice is not merely moral failure, but an inherent part of the human quest for meaning and self-expression in the face of life's inherent absurdity.
