Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Herbal tea, also known as tisane, is a beverage prepared by infusing or decocting various parts of plants such as leaves, seeds, roots, flowers, or fruits excluding the traditional tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Unlike true teas, herbal teas are typically caffeine-free and are valued for their diverse flavors and potential health benefits. They have been integral to traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, where they are used to address a range of ailments and promote general well-being. Herbal teas contain a variety of bioactive compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and saponins, which contribute to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting properties. Popular herbal teas include chamomile, ginger, peppermint, cinnamon, and ginseng, each offering specific therapeutic effects such as relaxation, digestive support, immune strengthening, and stress relief. The preparation and consumption of herbal teas have become a widespread cultural practice, appreciated not only for their medicinal value but also for their sensory qualities and role in social gatherings. In summary, herbal tea is a versatile and functional beverage with a rich history and a wide range of potential health benefits, making it a popular choice for both traditional healing and modern wellness.
