Exploring the Medicinal Applications of Mint (Mentha arvensis) in Traditional and Modern Medicine
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Mentha arvensis, commonly known as wild mint or pudina, is a perennial aromatic herb widely cultivated throughout the plains of India for culinary and medicinal purposes. This study aims to investigate the nutraceutical, pharmacological properties, and therapeutic potential of M. arvensis. The data presented herein has been meticulously compiled following a thorough literature review, which employed multiple search engines in conjunction with classical Unani literature. This systematic approach encompasses a detailed exploration of the various therapeutic properties attributed to these practices, which have been integral to Indian households since ancient times. Pharmacological studies demonstrated significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antioxidant, and antidiarrheal activities of M. arvensis extracts. This review concluded that further research should incorporate pharmaceutical literature, as plants present a diverse array of novel and structurally distinct potential chemical compounds that may be utilized as therapeutics or serve as leads in drug discovery
