Presuppositions And Social Media: Peculiar Use Of English Language In The Indian Context

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The evolution of language has long been influenced by various cultural, social, and technological factors. In the 21st century, social media platforms have emerged as critical spaces where language, particularly English, is shaped, altered, and transformed. India, a nation marked by linguistic diversity and a robust digital presence, has seen the English language adopt new structures, forms, and practices due to social media. This paper explores the peculiar use of the English language in Indian social media, focusing on the concept of presuppositions and how they manifest in digital communication. By analyzing posts, tweets, memes, and comments on popular Indian social media platforms, the paper highlights the influence of cultural, social, and political contexts in reshaping English language norms. The study will explore how presuppositions, often unspoken assumptions underlying communication, are employed in digital communication and how they reveal deeper insights into the Indian socio-cultural fabric.
