Unlocking Potential: Addressing Challenges to Help Alternative Learning System Learners Thrive

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the significant barriers to education faced by learners enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), focusing on personal, family, economic, and community- related challenges. The findings indicate that personal problems, such as lack of motivation, boredom, difficulty concentrating, and family issues, like inadequate support and childcare responsibilities, play a significant role in learner dropout rates. Economic constraints, including lack of transportation and insufficient financial resources for study materials, were also identified as key factors affecting learners’ ability to complete their education. Additionally, inconsistent teacher availability and peer-related distractions negatively impacted learner attendance and engagement. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions, including flexible scheduling, financial support, improved family and community involvement, and consistent teacher engagement. Recommendations for institutional changes are provided, including establishing a holistic support system that addresses the diverse needs of adult learners. These findings underscore the importance of creating an educational environment responsive to the unique challenges learners face to enhance retention rates and improve academic outcomes.
