Abstract: Dowry and Malayalam Cinema - A Look Back. Many films in Malayalam, including Murappennu released in 1965, Thulabharam released in 1968, Kandiyan Saramma (1966), Kallichellamma (1969), Agniputhri (1967), Aswamedham (1967), and Strodhanam (1993), have dealt with the subject of dowry and how it affects women. The curse of dowry creates many tragic experiences in married life. All these films present a picture of a society that values a woman's life in terms of gold and money.
