Global burden of tuberculosis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, exhibiting both persistent and evolving patterns over recent decades. Global Incidence and Mortality In 2023, the global incidence of TB stabilized at approximately 10.8 million cases, following a surge during the COVID-19 pandemic years. Despite this stabilization, TB continued to be the leading cause of death from an infectious agent, with 1.25 million fatalities worldwide in 2023. Le Monde.fr+1The Sun+1El País+1Le Monde.fr+1 Regional Disparities The burden of TB is disproportionately high in certain regions. Countries such as India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and the Democratic Republic of Congo report the highest incidence rates. Additionally, regions with lower socio-demographic indices often experience elevated TB rates, highlighting the influence of socioeconomic factors on disease prevalence. Risk Factors Several modifiable risk factors significantly contribute to the TB burden. Tobacco and alcohol use, along with conditions like diabetes mellitus, are among the leading contributors to TB-related disability-adjusted life years. Addressing these risk factors through targeted public health interventions is crucial for effective TB control. Recent Developments Recent studies emphasize the need for strengthened health systems to improve early detection and quality care for TB patients. There is a call for increased funding and resources to combat the disease, especially in the face of challenges such as drug-resistant TB strains. ScienceDirectElHuffPost In summary, while there has been progress in understanding and addressing TB, it remains a complex and persistent global health issue. Comprehensive strategies that include socioeconomic improvements, targeted risk factor mitigation, and robust healthcare interventions are essential to reduce the global burden of tuberculosis.
