Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: India and Africa share deep historical and cultural connections, which have grown into increasing economic ties in recent years. As India looks to diversify its trade and investment portfolio, Africa presents a large, untapped market full of potential for expansion. Objectives The goals of this study are to: 1. Analyze India’s existing trade relations with Africa, including bilateral trade volumes, trade balances, and major traded goods. 2. Identify key sectors for collaboration, such as information technology (IT), pharmaceuticals, textiles, and infrastructure. 3. Review strategic initiatives, like the India-Africa Forum Summit, aimed at improving trade and investment ties. Methodology The study draws on a thorough review of existing literature, trade data, and policy documents. It also includes case studies of successful Indian companies operating in Africa, and African companies in India, to uncover best practices. Findings India’s trade with Africa has expanded considerably, reaching a bilateral trade volume of over $70 billion in 2020. Major areas of collaboration include IT, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and infrastructure development. Strategic initiatives, such as the India-Africa Forum Summit, have contributed to increased investments and partnerships between the two regions. Contribution This paper demonstrates how strengthening trade relations with Africa can significantly boost India’s economy by opening up new markets, accessing valuable resources, and creating more investment opportunities. It also suggests policy measures to further improve these trade relations, such as enhancing diplomatic engagement, simplifying trade processes, and promoting investment.
