Abstract: This panel explores the ethical and methodological challenges of using fan-generated data, such as fanfiction, metadata, and user interactions, for digital humanities research. It highlights the importance of understanding fandom-specific norms around privacy, authorship, and data use, especially as researchs in DH increasingly turn to fan communities. The discussion will address how academic and fannish perspectives on data ethics intersect, diverge, and can inform best practices for working responsibly with this type of material.
