Abstract: So far, little knowledge of the distribution and bionomy of Xerocnephasia rigana (Sodoffsky, 1829) has been reported. The genus Xerocnephasia has one representative in Europe. A monotypical genus in Palaearctic. The author revised major collections in Hungary. He found that the species in Hungary is rare and local. Most of the sites are in the hills and mountain ranges. Plains have only sporadic occurrences. In the southern part of the country, the occurrence of the species was unknown. The author has recently collected X. rigana in the southern-most mountainous region of Hungary, the Villány Hills (Nagyharsány, Szársomlyó, 400 m). The first record of X. rigana (2 male specimens) was made by the author April 26th, 2000, in South Hungary (Transdanubia); Natura 2000: 6240, sub-pannonic steppic grasslands. The species mostly prefers the following habitats: rocky slopes, steppes, karst shrubby woodlands, dry shrubs, sandy grasslands and forest edges. The imagines fly from late April to late July, in two generations. The August and September flight period data reported by European literature are not yet known in Hungary. The study describes in detail the life history of the species and based on vouchers specimens' geographical distribution is depicted on a map.
