Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Biodegradable plastics are increasingly being adopted since there has been growing environmental concerns regarding plastic pollution. The paper attempts to give an all-inclusive perspective of the properties, degradation mechanism, sustainability, and challenges of adoption in biodegradable plastics. It deals with classification, composition, and key properties determining their use in different industries. The study further digs into the degradation methods of biodegradable plastics by microorganisms, highlighting their role and those of environmental factors in breaking down biodegradable plastics in various ecosystems. Moreover, the paper evaluates the material's environmental and economic sustainability regarding its life cycle, production cost, disposal techniques, and its long-term implications on ecosystems. The paper critiques the challenges posed by large-scale adoption, which include technological limitation, regulatory issues, and market feasibility. The paper discusses possible future strategies in improving cost-effectiveness, regulatory frameworks, and interdisciplinary research to improve the advancement of biodegradable plastics. Findings underscore the necessity for policy support, scientific innovation, and industrial collaboration in ensuring that biodegradable plastics are embraced for a better future.
