Exploring Identity in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper analyzes Haruki Murakami’s novel “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle,” focusing on the protagonist Toru Okada’s journey to quest for his true identity. He feels isolated from society due to his unemployment and the role of his wife, Kumiko, as the breadwinner. The novel blends realistic and fantastical elements to depict Okada's encounter with strange and dream-like events using the concept of magical realism. This paper also focuses on Albert Camus's idea of existentialism, specifically the concept of "absurd." Existentialists argue that life can seem meaningless and that humans should find their purpose in the world. Unlike other existentialist characters, Okada also struggles to find an identity and a sense of self in a puzzling world. The magical events help Okada go beyond his former ego and society's expectations to reconnect with a deeper sense of being. In this way, the novel explores how losing your formal identity can paradoxically lead to deep self-discovery. Keywords: Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Toru Okada, existentialism, absurdism, Albert Camus, search for meaning, identity magical Realism, self-discovery, true self.
