GLOBE Observer Data Quality Flag Documentation & Jupyter Notebook Code

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Citizen science data, such as the data we collect from the GLOBE Observer app, are abundant, global, and may need verification to ascertain reliability. Flagging a data means that a user may need to take a closer look to see if the data is usable for the purpose it was intended to be. Flagging doesn't mean the data will be removed from the collection. It means that the user may need to further investigate the observation. For the Jupyter Notebook code, we test the code using land cover datasets. This code provides a comprehensive guide to check data quality flags that could eventually be extended to the other protocols (clouds, mosquito habitats, and tree heights). The code provides checks on datetime, elevation, and location attributes to assure reliability and data integrity.
