Contribution of Indian Knowledge System in the Field of Science, Technology, and Education
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is a multilayered system of traditional knowledge covering a range of disciplines including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, environmental science, and pedagogy. Based in ancient scriptures and oral lore, IKS developed as an all-embracing and interdisciplinary knowledge body integrating principles of sustainability, ethical life, and intellectual rigor. This study probes the deep impact of IKS on science, technology, and learning through a historical examination, thematic classification, and actual case studies. It chronicles how Indian researchers led innovations such as the decimal system, surgery, and environmentally friendly water conservation centuries ahead of comparable breakthroughs elsewhere in the world. The article also discusses the real-world applications of IKS in modern contexts—like Ayurvedic nanomedicine, green architecture, and competency-oriented education derived from the Gurukul system. It also provides suggestions for incorporating IKS into modern scientific and academic systems through policy changes, curriculum inclusion, and inter-disciplinary research. Through high cultural sensitivity and scientific credibility, this research makes an important call to revitalize and harmonize IKS as an indispensable asset in responding to world challenges in sustainability, medicine, and education. The findings promote a knowledge system that respects indigenous intelligence and drives innovation and diversity in the 21st century.
