Improving Leadership Research Through Causal Mapping

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This commentary evaluates the methodological and theoretical contributions of a recent study on causal diagrams (DAGs) in leadership research. The reviewed paper addresses a critical gap in empirical management studies. It systematizes control variable selection through a taxonomy of controls and a workflow for constructing causal diagrams. The study’s main strength is a practical replication of previous studies. It illustrates how misapplied controls distort findings. Another point of strength of the study is its integration of sensitivity analysis for unobserved confounding. However, reliance on simulated data and a single case study limits its generalizability. Underdeveloped theories in leadership research pose challenges for causal modeling. The study advances methodological rigor by bridging econometric and experimental approaches. It urges transparency in causal assumptions. It may have implications for future research. Hybrid methods may become more common by combining DAGs with machine learning and dynamic modeling for leadership phenomena. The paper sets a new benchmark for empirical rigor by prioritizing causal identification over statistical significance.
