Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This descriptive qualitative study “School Crises and Management Practices” explored the current school crises experiences, management practices employed, and the gaps of the existing management practices as identified by the internal and external stakeholders in selected public elementary and secondary schools in the Division of Bohol. Data were collected through interviews. Nine school heads, ten teachers, seven PTA Officers and nine BLGU representatives from the eleven purposively selected public elementary and secondary schools in the Division of Bohol participated in the study. Employing iterative thematic analysis, the findings revealed that the schools experienced various types of crises, including resource constraints, teacher-related issues, student-related issues, community and environmental factors including natural disasters, and leadership and management issues. The crisis management practices employed by the schools were focused on the proactive measures, reactive measures, recovery and planning, leadership and management, community engagement, resource management and student well-being. The study also identified gaps in the existing crisis management practices, including inadequate communication, insufficient training, and lack of resources. The thematic analysis yielded six themes: communication and collaboration, preparedness and planning, safety and security, community engagement and partnerships, resource management, and leadership and governance. This study recommends the development of a comprehensive crisis management plan that addresses the identified gaps and incorporates the themes that emerged from the study. The plan should prioritize communication, preparedness, safety, community engagement, resource management, values education, infrastructure development, policy review, and leadership and governance. The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature on school crisis management, highlighting the importance of proactive and collaborative approaches to managing crises in schools. This study provides insights for policymakers, school administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders to develop effective crisis management strategies that promote the safety, well-being, and resilience of the school community.
