Parenting Style as a Predictor of Adolescent's Self Concept

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The effect of various parenting methods on teenagers' sense of identity is investigated in this research. One hundred teenagers from Haryana were studied using a descriptive research approach to look at how three different parenting styles—authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive—relate to their self-concept. Statistical analyses reveal that locality significantly influences perceptions of parenting, with urban adolescents experiencing more positive and supportive parenting compared to their rural peers. However, the adolescents' self-concept does not show significant variation based on locality. Findings indicate that adolescents raised under an authoritative parenting style exhibit the highest levels of self-concept, followed by those with permissive parenting, while those experiencing an authoritarian style report the lowest self-concept scores. The importance of parental style in influencing teenagers' sense of self is shown by these findings.
