Abstract: This is a biography of John (Juan) Mackenna, an Irish-born military engineer whose career spanned the Spanish Empire and the Chilean independence movement. Born into a Catholic family from County Monaghan that had long resisted Anglo-Protestant domination, Mackenna’s transnational journey began with his migration to Spain under the patronage of his great-uncle, Alexander O’Reilly, a prominent figure in the Spanish military. Trained as an engineer, Mackenna served in campaigns against Morocco and revolutionary France before being appointed Governor of Osorno in colonial Chile by Ambrosio O’Higgins. His marriage into the Chilean elite and alliance with Bernardo O’Higgins drew him into the independence struggle, during which he played a key administrative and military role. His eventual exile and death in a politically charged duel in Buenos Aires highlight the factionalism of early independence politics.
