Emotive Phrase Usage in ESL Learners: Challenges and Patterns
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: : This article investigates how non-native speakers, particularly Uzbek ESL learners, acquire and use emotive phrases in English. Emotive expressions are essential in conveying interpersonal attitudes and emotional states, yet they present significant learning challenges for ESL students due to linguistic, pragmatic, and cultural differences. This study identifies key patterns in emotive phrase acquisition and highlights common errors, including overgeneralization, pragmatic misjudgment, and native language interference. The study underscores the importance of integrating culturally sensitive pragmatics into ESL instruction to enhance learners' communicative competence.
