Abstract: SQL databases have been in use for many years and have become the favorite data management system for many enterprise applications. However, like every other technology, SQL databases have their pros and cons. Even though the benefits of SQL databases may outweigh their shortcomings, the recent surge in the number of new technologies, such as NoSQL databases, data lakes, and cloud computing, have made many organizations rethink their SQL database usage. This book’s intent is to overcome the shortcomings or hurdles of SQL databases and let organizations take advantage of the benefits while integrating their SQL databases with cloud computing. This is the most popular cloud platform and serves thousands of customers across the globe. In this chapter, we will introduce the two technologies, cloud computing and SQL databases, introduce the key concepts behind cloud computing, and explain the trends with SQL databases in recent years. Finally, we will discuss the steps required to integrate cloud computing with SQL databases. Throughout this book, you will learn how to integrate specific cloud services with specific SQL databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle SQL.
