Crypto at Sea The Role of Digital Currencies in Maritime Money Laundering

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The rapid rise of cryptocurrency has introduced both opportunities and challenges in the financial sector. While digital assets offer a decentralized and efficient means of conducting transactions, they have also become a preferred tool for criminals engaged in maritime illicit activities. From facilitating piracy ransom payments to funding smuggling rings, cryptocurrencies provide anonymity and global accessibility, making it difficult for regulators to track illicit financial flows. Offshore crypto exchanges further exacerbate the issue by offering unregulated financial services that can be exploited by criminal enterprises. This paper argues that the unchecked use of cryptocurrencies in maritime financial crime threatens international security, economic stability, and the effectiveness of existing anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks. Without stringent regulations, these digital assets serve as an enabler for transnational crime, making it imperative for governments and financial institutions to take decisive action.
