Victory Coins of Constantine I (AD 313–325)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the typology, design, and symbolic significance of the Victory Coins issued during the reign of Emperor Constantine I (AD 313–325), which served as instruments of political and religious messaging in the Late Roman Empire. These coins commemorate pivotal events such as the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (AD 312), the Edict of Milan (AD 313) and the unification of the Eastern and Western Empires following the defeat of Licinius (AD 324). Classification is based on obverse and reverse legends, Victory iconography and mint marks, cross-referenced with the Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) catalog to determine issue periods and mints. The Victory coinage functioned both as tangible historical records and as ideological symbols reinforcing imperial authority and the unity of the empire.
