Composite Analysis and Clustering of Patterns Prior to Extreme Wintertime Cold in the Midwest United States
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Here is the final version of the Matlab scripts and teleconnection data for "Precursors to Extreme Wintertime Cold in the Midwest United States." This research uses MERRA-2 data to identify cold air outbreaks in the Midwest United States and what patterns happen before them during different North American weather regimes. The scripts and teleconnection data included here add up to about 5MB when unzipped. Gridded MERRA2 data can be downloaded separately. We changed the order of operations from the first two versions of this project. Now, we use clustering to indentify North American weather regimes and then analyze cold air outbreaks that begin around the US state of Indiana during each. We also check how teleconnection anomalies increase the risk of extreme cold at various lead times. Check the README.txt file for instructions on how to use these scripts and in what order.
