Marine Macroalgae Present in the Coastal Profile of the Central Zone of Manabí, Ecuador.
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Macroalgae play an important role in maintaining the overall balance of the planet, not only through oxygen production but also due to their importance as the foundation of food webs, climate regulation, habitats, nutrient cycles, and their commercial value to living organisms. They have a profound impact on global climate and on the daily lives of humans. Their conservation and protection are essential for maintaining the health of our oceans and the planet. The main objective of this study was to determine the presence of marine macroalgae along the coastal profile of the central zone of Manabí. Three zones were strategically selected for their composition: Punta Blanca-Jaramijó (-0.929036, -80.666193), Barbasquillo-Manta (-0.94373, -80.75463), and Puerto López-Jipijapa (-1.09456, -80.89857), where algal species samples were collected for identification according to established protocols. A total of 18 macroalgae species were identified, belonging to three phyla: Chlorophyta, Heterokontophyta, and Rhodophyta, with Lobophora variegata (41) being the most frequently recorded species, corresponding to the phylum Heterokontophyta, class Phaeophyta. Regarding the bromatological analyses, significant results were obtained in all samples, as well as for minerals, providing guidelines for future beneficial research. The ecotoxicological tests (heavy metals) showed values above the permissible normal indices, highlighting the need to consider these results for the conservation and recovery of contaminated areas.
