The role of communicative action in existentialist healthcare ethics

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Existentialist healthcare ethics navigates the complex moral issues between individual autonomy, medical intervention, and the existential realities of human existence. The moral complexity arises from the tension between respecting patient autonomy and addressing the inherent uncertainties and limitations of medical care. Using the philosophical method of analysis, this study examines the moral implications of existential health ethics, highlighting its dimensions inherent in healthcare and decision-making. This study maintains that existential issues challenge both patients and healthcare providers, including freedom, illness, and responsibility, posed by the finitude of human life and suffering. The solution to these challenges lies in a nuanced approach to communicative action. It entails fostering open dialogue, honoring patient autonomy while also considering the broader existential concerns that underpin medical care. This would necessitate a shift towards a more holistic understanding of health that encompasses not only physical well-being but also the psychological, social, and existential dimensions of medical practice, fostering a more compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
