Cultural Identity of Highly Educated Chinese Women in the Workplace in Japan

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to clarify the construction of cultural identity among highly educated female Chinese workers in Japan by analyzing their avowals and ascriptions.Additionally, the study examines how the intersection of multiple social categories influences the formation of their cultural identity. This research conducted semi-structured interviews with four highly educated Chinese women working in Japan, and their narratives were analyzed based on Cultural Identity Theory. The results revealed that positive avowals were shaped through the intersection of ethnic gender identity, the identity of being highly educated, and professional identity. However, the intersection of ethnicity and gender also led to negative ascriptions from others. The contradictions between avowals and ascriptions result in ambivalence towards their identity as Chinese individuals.Furthermore, power relations associated with attributes such as "foreigner," "woman," and "young person" intersect, subjecting these highly educated Chinese women to multiple forms of oppression. The discrimination and inequality linked to these overlapping social attributes contributed to the complex challenges they face in their daily lives.
