Abstract: The Time It Snowed in Puerto Rico is a coming-of-age novel chronicling two years in the life of Verdita, an eleven-year-old girl living in the Puerto Rico. The book begins in 1961, a time rich in Puerto Rican history as American influences become more prevalent in the lives of islanders. Everything is changing for Verdita, her body, her life, her community, and country. She struggles with who she is as a woman, a daughter, a Puerto Rican, and an adult. Verdita's search for identity mirrors the country's efforts to determine what it represents as a conquered nation and blended culture.
