Abstract: In the present study, an automatic vehicle location system in public transport is used by generating a series of operational indicators related to travel time variability (VTV) for an application case. The aim is to identify, based on these indicators, route segments with high rates of variability, an unfavorable situation for the user of public transportation. The study is carried out from a database provided by the company Discar, responsible for the operation of the Periférica route in the metropolitan area of San José, Costa Rica. VTV indicators are generated for each route segment for periods of 15 minutes. The hourly variability of these indicators is observed and weighted indicators are generated based on the length of the segment and average speed, identifying the most critical sections of the route in terms of travel time indicators.
