Type: article
Abstract: This article explores the geographical terms used in the language of the 14th-century Azerbaijani poet Imadaddin Nasimi. As a Hurufist, Nasimi’s poetry is rooted in symbolism, epithets, similes, and metaphors, following the traditions of Sufi literature. Therefore, geographical terms in his work are often employed figuratively rather than literally. The study provides a thematic classification of these terms and includes etymological and statistical analyses. It also examines the influence of the geographical classification system of the ancient Greek scholar Claudius Ptolemy as reflected in Nasimi’s poetic language. The geographical terms found in Nasimi’s work are grouped into the following thematic categories: terms denoting geographical regions, water basins, the edges of water bodies, high reliefs, plains, dry deserts, green plains, types of wind, underground cavities, the Earth's crust, forested areas, types of stone (e.g., raft stones), soil, and the horizon. The research reveals that Nasimi used 14 geographical terms of Arabic origin, 10 of Turkic origin, and 15 of Persian origin.
