Abstract: The Present research critically examines the role of microenterprises in employment generation in India, focusing on their contributions to rural and semi-urban economies. Defined under the MSME Development Act of 2006, microenterprises employ up to 10 people and operate with low capital investments. They are significant drivers of grassroots economic growth, providing jobs for unskilled and semi-skilled workers, including marginalized groups like women and rural populations. Recent developments, such as digital transformation and green initiatives, have expanded their employment potential. However, Challenges like financial constraints, lack of formal training, and regulatory hurdles limit their growth and sustainability. The study underscores the importance of targeted interventions, including simplified credit access, skill development programs, and formalization incentives, to unlock the sector’s full potential. With the right policies, microenterprises can play a transformative role in reducing poverty, promoting inclusivity, and supporting balanced regional development in India.
