Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: : This systematic review focuses on studies conducted on World Heritage Site (WHS) and its relationship with any element of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This review aims to understand the objectives of those places as tourist destinations being conserved and importance of doing so. Studies extended by nurturing WHS as a tourism destination. It is closely connected to several SDG elements as outlined by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Findings that explained preserving WHS are crucially important in various intersection tourism SDGs especially for long-term goals. Using two primary journal databases, Web of Science and Scopus, the review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guidelines. The search yielded eighteen articles suitable for systematic analysis. Most significantly, the review was able to identify two primary themes that were connected to the SDGs and WHS preservation and heritage preservation, tourism destination, and WHS preservation, i.e., tourism development practices and strategies of specific cases of the WHS which align with the principles of environmental sustainability, inclusive economic growth, social development, and economic development. The study suggests topics for future research, including stakeholder cooperation and a value-based management approach. Seven sub-themes were identified because of thoroughly examining the two main themes. Overall, further analysis of the study advances the understanding and the growth of sustainable tourism in WHS. After the study, several recommendations were made for the benefit of future researchers.
