Update of the CNS5 catalogue: a multi-wavelength census of the solar neighbourhood

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Catalogues of nearby stars represent the best-characterised stellar and substellar populations and, as such, are fundamental tools for studying the solar neighbourhood and the composition of the Galactic disk, for selecting targets for exoplanet surveys, and for testing stellar evolution models.By combining astrometry across different wavelengths, the Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS5) provides the most volume-complete sample of all known stars and brown dwarfs which are possibly located within 25 pc of the Sun.The CNS5 is compiled based on trigonometric parallaxes from Gaia DR3 and Hipparcos, and supplemented with astrometric data from Spitzer and ground-based surveys carried out in the infrared, as well as radio astrometry from ALMA, VLA, and VLBA.After its initial release, the CNS5 has been continuously updated with observational data for nearby stars from various sources. In this talk, we review this census, including new additions to the 25 pc sample, and present an update of the CNS5.We also discuss how our methods for constructing an astrometrically clean catalogue of nearby stars have enabled us to discover and characterise new nearby white dwarfs.
