Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Ruellia simplex is a 3-foot tall perennial plant that has dark green leaves and pale- colored stems. It is indigenous to South America and can be found growing in countries like Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. The plant possesses several woody stems arising from the ground and elongated, purple leaves. Certain species of the genus Ruellia, especially those with red-pigmented flowers or inflorescences, have been found to be potentially toxic. Indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions, it has a combination of bioactive compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, and triterpenes, which justify its medicinal value. Its pharmacological activity has been reported to be multi-faced in various studies, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities. The anticancer activity of the plant is attributed to its flavonoid content, which suppresses cancer cell growth and causes apoptosis. It also shows anti-inflammatory activity through inhibition of enzymes such as COX-2 and LOX, decrease pain and inflammation. Its antinociceptive action is also used to eliminate pain through modulation of pain pathways. Ruellia simplex possesses antidiabetic activity by enhanced insulin sensitivity and impact on glucose metabolism. Beside from these therapeutic applications, the ethanol extract has been shown to have extreme skincare effects. It enhances hydration, and protects the barrier function of the skin, and invigorating collagen synthesis, enhancing elasticity without activate irritation. These effects give Ruellia simplex a promising subject for incorporation in skincare products. Though it is therapeutically promising, clinical studies are essential to ascertain its bioavailability, safety, and efficacy in humans. Additional research could lead to the development of Ruellia simplex based traditional remedies of many health ailments, emphasizing its worth in traditional as well as modern medicine
