(Libertarian) Decentralized Web3 Map: In Search of a Post-Westphalian Territory
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This preprint explores the ongoing transformation of global governance in the context of the rise of decentralized Web3 technologies. The study delves into the evolution of nation-states since the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, highlighting how the integration of emerging technologies, particularly blockchain and decentralized platforms, is reshaping traditional notions of state sovereignty. It critically examines the implications of these technological shifts for digital citizenship, data sovereignty, and global governance, arguing that we are potentially entering a post-Westphalian era. The paper discusses the emergence of new governance paradigms, including Network States, Network Sovereignties, and Algorithmic Nations, and their impact on the relationship between citizens, states, and digital monopolies. This work contributes to the ongoing debate on the future of global citizenship and the role of decentralized technologies in reimagining governance beyond traditional nation-state frameworks.
