Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: NICU nurses face considerable psychological stress due to the demanding nature of their work, impacting their well-being and performance. Understanding the coping strategies and support systems available to these nurses is crucial for improving their mental health and job satisfaction. This study aims to identify and analyze the coping strategies and support systems that NICU nurses in Saudi Arabia utilize to manage work-related stress. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to explore the experiences of 20 NICU nurses from various hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key coping strategies and support systems. The thematic analysis revealed eight primary coping strategies: problem-solving, seeking emotional support, maintaining a work-life balance, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, professional development, physical exercise, spiritual practices, and humor. Six key support systems were identified: peer support, family support, professional counseling services, institutional support programs, religious and spiritual guidance, and community support networks. The findings highlight the diverse coping mechanisms and support systems that NICU nurses rely on to manage stress. Effective coping strategies and robust support systems are essential for maintaining the psychological well-being of NICU nurses. The study recommends the implementation of comprehensive support programs within healthcare institutions, including regular mental health assessments, professional counseling, and peer support initiatives. Enhancing these resources can improve job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and promote better patient care outcomes.
