PlasticsFatE Third Policy Brief - Health Effects of Micro- and Nanoplastics

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Executive Summary Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), ubiquitous byproducts of global plastic pollution, pose significant potential risks to human health. These particles, often smaller than 5 mm, are increasingly found in food, water, air, and human tissues. Research underscores their ability to traverse biological barriers, accumulate in organs, and disrupt cellular and systemic functions. MNPs raise concerns about long-term adverse health effects. This 3rd PlasticsFatE policy brief examines current findings on MNP exposure pathways, biological interactions, and potential health impacts, emphasizing the urgent need for policy interventions to mitigate possible risks.
