Amadiba Indigenous Agroforestry Species Catalogue

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A Species Catalogue designed for the project Developing capacity for Indigenous Community Agroforestry in the Amadiba area of Eastern Mpondoland. Output 1 of January 2025 for the SADC Great Green Wall Initiative funded by the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project is a collaboration between the Institute of Natural Resources (INR), Sustaining the Wild Coast (SWC), and Siyasisiza Trust (ST) working together with residents of the Amadiba Coastal Villages in Eastern Mpondoland. This catalogue presents information on useful indigenous agroforestry species planted as part of the project in the Amadiba area in South Africa. These plant species naturally occur in the area, many of them bear edible fruits and medicinal parts, and all of them have agroforestry uses like providing shade, windbreaks, or wood. This catalogue can be read together with the Plant Care Manuals developed as part of the project, which provide general guidelines on planting, care and monitoring, sustainable use, and propagation.
