Software Testing in the German Automotive Industry Case Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This case study explores software testing practices within the German automotive industry, specifically focusing on the development and quality of test case specifications. Conducted by Juhnke et al. (2021), the study investigates a German original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and its suppliers through interviews and surveys. It highlights how testing is embedded into the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) via the automotive V-model, ensuring structured testing responsibilities across development tiers. The study identifies nine major categories of challenges affecting test specification quality, including incomplete or inconsistent input artifacts, insufficient tester knowledge, ambiguous test cases, and process deficiencies. Findings emphasize the critical need for formal quality assurance in test documentation, especially in distributed environments involving internal and external teams. The research contributes to software engineering by presenting a taxonomy of test-related issues and offering insights into improving communication, documentation, and collaboration in industrial software testing practices.
