Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Measles remains a significant public health concern, particularly among children under five in developing countries. This study examines the factors influencing the impact of measles on children under five attending Bay Regional Hospital in Baidoa, Somalia. The research explores socio-demographic factors, healthcare accessibility, vaccination coverage, and knowledge of measles among caregivers. Using a cross-sectional study design, data was collected through structured surveys and interviews with caregivers and healthcare professionals. The findings indicate that low immunization rates, malnutrition, and inadequate healthcare access significantly contribute to the severity of measles cases. Additionally, cultural beliefs, lack of awareness, and economic constraints play a crucial role in measles prevalence and complications. The study highlights common complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea, blindness, and long-term developmental impairments. The study emphasizes the need for increased measles vaccination coverage, enhanced public health awareness campaigns, and improved healthcare infrastructure to mitigate measles-related morbidity and mortality. Recommendations include strengthening routine immunization programs, integrating nutrition support into healthcare services, and implementing targeted education campaigns for caregivers. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and organizations working to reduce the impact of measles among children in Somalia.
