Integrative Literature Review on Discrimination Against Women in Brazilian Military Environments

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: When presenting gender inequality in military institutions as a topic, this study aims to identify what the literature has discussed regarding discrimination against women in Brazilian military settings. This is a qualitative integrative literature review guided by the central question: what has the literature discussed about discrimination against women in Brazilian military environments? The search was conducted in 2022 across the LILACS, Oasisbr, PePSIC, SciELO, and Scopus databases, without language restrictions, using a combination of 27 descriptors. The screening and selection process followed the PRISMA protocol. The initial search yielded 1,576 publications, from which 22 articles comprised the final sample after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, covering the period from 2007 to 2021. To perform the content analysis of such articles, three thematic categories were previously established: (1) gender stereotypes attributed to women in the military; (2) situations and contexts of discrimination, such as late admission into institutions, scarcity of reserved positions, and limitations on assigned roles; and (3) the effects of discrimination on personal and professional life, including unequal distribution of labor, moral and sexual harassment, and emotional impacts. These categories were analyzed in light of the Theory of Ambivalent Sexism. The study concludes that women entering Brazilian military environments face limited opportunities and stigmatization, reinforced by social norms that sustain exclusionary structures, which occurs in a hostile and benevolent manner.
