The Gurukul System And Its Relevance In Designing Holistic And Values-Based Modern Education
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : The Gurukul system, a traditional Indian education model, incorporated leadership, discipline, ethical basis, and real-life skills with a focus on moral ideals, integral development, and close teacher-student interactions. The current study explores how it influences the learning outcomes of students, ethical consciousness, and leadership skills in order to assess its viability in modern education. Primary data were collected using a mixed-methods descriptive-comparative study approach through questionnaires and standardized tests. The findings reveal that the most widely used Gurukul component to be integrated is Moral & Ethical Education (55%), followed by Practical Life Skills (40%), Discipline & Spiritual Learning (35%), Close Teacher-Student Bonding (30%), and Community Living & Collaboration (25%). A comparison of learning outcomes between contemporary and Gurukul-based education systems reveals that students who are exposed to Gurukul components score higher in the following categories: Discipline & Focus (85% vs. 50%), Leadership & Responsibility (75% vs. 55%), Ethical Awareness (80% vs. 50%), and Problem-Solving (70% vs. 60%). Students in modern education, on the other hand, score slightly higher in Academic Performance (70% vs. 65%), reflecting a higher focus on formal curricula. The research concludes that blending Gurukul aspects into present-day education stimulates a balanced, value-oriented pedagogical plan that sustains academic excellence as well as nourishes character, moral obligation, and integrated advancement. Such disclosures highlight the viability of a new hybrid pedagogy model wherein traditional knowledge coexists with progressive pedagogic practices to prepare future leaders that are socially, morally, and intellectually empowered.
