Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide a critical discussion of the Second Language Motivational Self-System (L2MSS) model and the implications of this model for language teaching research and practice. While the L2MSS is considered one of the most influential models in L2 motivation research, its utility has recently been questioned. In this discussion, the background to the L2MSS and related concepts is provided. Current critical issues in relation to the model are then discussed, and avenues for future research are suggested. Implications for L2 classroom practice are also provided.
