From Data to Decision: Operationalizing Open Science in Biodiversity Assessments

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: To achieve the 30x30 target set out in the Global Biodiversity Framework, we need more than just data availability. We also need transparent, inclusive and ethically grounded knowledge flows that connect diverse sources of evidence to policy-relevant key messages. Drawing on my experience of contributing to various global and regional biodiversity assessments, my presentation will explore how Open Science principles can support biodiversity conservation in contexts where data is scarce. I will focus on improving the traceability of knowledge from its original sources to policy-relevant key messages, guided by the FAIR and CARE principles. I will also briefly discuss the role of digital tools and artificial intelligence, emphasizing the opportunities and challenges of their responsible and ethical use for biodiversity monitoring, assessment and reporting. Finally, I will discuss the critical role of trust, transparency, and equitable access in advancing scientific cooperation and effective knowledge sharing across institutional and disciplinary boundaries.
