Designing Language Learning Games for Primary School Learners: Strategies for Promoting Language Acquisition and Engagement
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This paper explores the strategic use of games as a tool for developing communicative competence in primary school learners studying foreign languages. Drawing on key theoretical frameworks such as Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory and Canale and Swain's communicative competence model, it highlights the cognitive, linguistic, and social benefits of integrating games into language instruction. The study reviews existing educational resources and provides practical guidelines for designing and implementing games that promote interactivity, contextual learning, and linguistic development. Examples include role-playing scenarios, word bingo, and collaborative storytelling. By aligning games with educational objectives, educators can create engaging, effective, and culturally relevant learning experiences that prepare young learners for diverse communicative contexts.
